GUIDING TEACHER
Zen Master Bomun (George Bowman) has practiced Zen since 1968. His primary teachers are Zen Master Seung Sahn and Joshu Sazaki Roshi. He has also practiced with Shunryu Suzuki Roshi, Taizan Maezumi Roshi, Eido Roshi, Aitken Roshi and Kobun Chino Roshi.Zen Master Bomun has studied and taught in China, Korea, Japan, Europe, Canada, and the United States. He is the founder and guiding teacher of the Single Flower Sangha.
Currently, he resides at the Furnace Mountain Zen Center in Kentucky. Zen Master Bomun travels regularly to several different areas of the US to lead sesshin for the Single Flower Sangha.
Bomun's teaching is both deeply rooted in the traditional teachings of the Buddha, the lineage teachings of the old Zen Masters, and totally in the moment.
1968 Began Zen practice under Suzuki Roshi
1969–1971 Graduate work in Psychology of Religion, Brown University and Duke Univiversity, Department of Anthropology
1972–1990 Studied in residence with Zen Master Seung Sahn at the Providence Zen Center.
1972 Lay Ordination, given the Buddhist name Soeng Hae (Ocean Nature)
1977 Received Inka from Zen Master Seung Sahn.
1977–1990 Guiding Teacher of the Providence Zen Center. Taught and studied worldwide.
1977–2008 Koan Study with Joshu Sasaki Roshi
1982 Ordained as a Bodhisattva Zen Priest
1991–1999 Guiding Teacher for The Cambridge Buddhist Association
1992 Dharma Transmission from Zen Master Seung Sahn as Zen Master Bomun.
1993–2000 Private practice of Contemplative Psychotherapy in Cambridge, MA.
1994 Founder and Guiding teacher of the Institute for the Study of Meditation and Psychotherapy in Cambridge, MA.
1994 Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
